COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Ministries

Each year in the Season of Lent on Maundy Thursday we hold a worship service in which the central acts of worship are the Lord’s Supper and Footwashing.  In those acts we remind ourselves that Jesus came among us “as one who serves” (Lk. 22:27) and that we are to follow his example (Jn. 13:15).

We have been called to a life of service, and we continually seek out ways we can minister to and with those in our community and beyond.  Some ministries are more demanding than others, but we have found numerous ways for people of all ages to be involved in service.

Some work in the garden, some lead Bible study, some visit the sick and lonely, some tend the garden, some feed the hungry, some house the homeless, some visit those in jail, some fix broken things in people’s homes…whatever we do, we do it with the prayers and support of our church, and we do it “in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God” (Col. 3:17).

El Salvador
Mission Partnership

In 2010 we joined the First Baptist Church in Springfield in developing a mission partnership with Iglesia Bautista Dios Compasivo in Ahuachapan, El Salvador.  Over the past few years we have worked with our brothers and sisters there to establish a bakery co-op that trains and employs young people, to help install well-ventilated stoves in homes in the community, to help build chicken coops with the agricultural cooperative, to assist students with their school needs through scholarships, and more.

Urban Gardening

In 2010 we transformed what was once a small playground outside our church into an urban garden.  We now grow a variety of food–onions, kale, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, garlic, and more–and we donate the harvest to a local kitchen called the House of Bread which offers free hot meals seven days a week.

Rebuilding Together

Each year on the last Saturday in April we join members from the surrounding community in RTDayton’s rebuild day.  We sponsor the renewal of a house and we join together to do much of that work on rebuild day.
